I have over 10 years of business experience in camping vehicle rentals in Hawaii. As the owner of Imua Camper Company from 1999 to 2009, I recognized the great demand for an alternative to the standard ‘resort and rental car’ style of vacation and found a nice niche with more adventurous travelers by offering Volkswagen camper vans as rentals. Unfortunately, with those vehicles no longer in production, the age of the fleet was becoming too difficult to maintain while growing a small family, and I eventually sold the business to an energetic young fellow on the island of Oahu.
I immediately began thinking of newer alternatives with which to start a similar business, but in the meantime my days were occupied by chasing my young twin boys around, and also began working as both a carpenter and, more recently, as a commercial fisherman from both kayaks and larger boats. I’ve even managed to get good enough at kayak fishing to become sponsored by industry leading companies like Jackson Kayak, Werner Paddles, and Release Reels. As my boys became older and more independent, I went back to thinking about a new approach to ‘adventure rentals’, and have settled on the idea you have found here, with various vehicles being outfitted with roof top tents and camping gear. I think you’ll find it to be a spectacular way to experience the unique culture and landscape of Hawaii.
But I still go fishing as often as I can!
